NORMAL, Ill.—The seventh-ranked Marquette volleyball team faltered on Saturday night, dropping a 3-2 contest (27-25, 25-12, 22-25, 21-25, 11-15) to No. 14 Illinois at the Redbird Classic in Normal, Ill.
Allie Barber led Marquette (6-2) with 21 kills and hit at a .348 mark, while Hope Werch had an efficient night connecting on 13 kills, just one error and hit.480. Lauren Speckman and Sarah Rose dished out 28 and 21 assists, respectively, while Martha Konovodoff collected 24 digs.
Marquette opened the match with a 2-0 advantage, but the Illini forced a fifth set after winning two sets. The Golden Eagles traded points and stay strong in the fifth and final set, but could not close out the win.
The Golden Eagles hit .237 in the match and held Illinois to just a .196 clip, but the Illini tallied 11 team blocks.
The Golden Eagles have one final match remaining in the Redbird Classic and will take on host Illinois State on Sunday. Sept. 15 at 3 p.m. CT.
