Barber leads the Golden Eagles with 16 kills
MILWAUKEE—The No. 8 Marquette volleyball team opened the Hyatt Regency Marquette Invitational on a strong note, earning a 3-0 sweep (25-19, 25-23, 25-18) over in-state foe Green Bay on Friday evening at the Al McGuire Center.
Marquette (8-2) was led by senior Allie Barber with a match-high 16 kills, hitting at a .417 mark, while Hope Werch was just shy of a double-double tallying nine kills and 13 digs. Junior Kaitlyn Lines and sophomore Ellie Koontz added eight and seven kills, respectively.
Senior Lauren Speckman handed out 18 assists, while junior Sarah Rose added 17 in the match as classmate Martha Konovodoff collected 12 digs.
"We started a little slow tonight and we were aiming too low on the court," Barber said. "Once we started hitting for perimeter it turned around for us and it showed late in the last few games."
Though the Golden Eagles earned the sweep, Green Bay (7-3) challenged as MU had to mount a 10-1 run after trailing the Phoenix 18-15 in the first set. The second set was tied six times and had three lead changes as MU picked up the win, while the third frame Marquette jumped out to a 5-1 lead early and never trailed. Barber earned the final points with a winning kill in each of the three sets played.
The Phoenix were led by Taylor Wolf with 15 kills, while Brenna Hesse collected a match-high 19 digs.
The Golden Eagles are back in action Saturday morning, Sept. 21 at 10 a.m. hosting St. Louis. Free donuts will be available to the first 100 students.
