WSOC falls 2-1 to NIU in double overtime

MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University women's soccer team dropped a competitive 2-1 double overtime match against the Northern Illinois Huskies on Friday night at Valley Fields.

Sophomore Macey Shock scored her first career goal in the 87th minute for the Golden Eagles (2-6-0) to send the match to overtime, but NIU's Madison Kaufmann ended it in the 102nd minute.

Freshman Mel McNamara notched her first career start in net for MU, making two saves on the Huskies' four shots in a scoreless first half. Freshman Alex Campana had Marquette's best look of the opening frame from about eight yards out in the 33rd minute but was stopped by NIU goalkeeper Megan Donnally who recorded seven saves on the night.

The beginning of the second period had little offensive action from either side until the 76th minute when Haley Hoppe scored unassisted for NIU. After a mass of substitutions, Shock tallied the equalizer in the final four minutes of regulation.

Kaufmann's golden goal was assisted by Isabella Sabo and came off a corner kick from the far side of the pitch.

The Golden Eagles conclude non-conference action in the return of an in-season home-and-home with Colorado State on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Valley Fields.
