MADISON —The Marquette University men's soccer team defeated the University of Wisconsin 2-0 on Tuesday night at the McClimon Soccer Complex.
Â
MU scored its first goal of the game in the 37th minute off a pass from Patrick Seagrist on the left wing to a streaking Christian Marquez, who volleyed the pass off one touch into the right corner of the net. The goal was the first of his career for Marquez, a freshman from Berwyn, Illinois.
Â
"I think we saw a lot of grit and determination tonight," MU head coach Louis Bennett said. "We were dead set on playing our brand of soccer and we really executed. In the big picture, it's a two-goal victory on the road and I'm really happy for the lads."
Â
The first half saw the Golden Eagles outshoot the Badgers by an 8-1 margin as they controlled the pace of play for the first 45 minutes.
Â
In half number two, MU held steady with its 1-0 lead until the 66th minute, when Patrick Seagrist found Lukas Sunesson streaking down the left sideline. Sunesson, a sophomore from Taby, Sweden, did the rest of the work himself, outrunning the Badger defenders and tucking a left-footed strike into the lower right corner. The goal was his first of the 2019 season as well.
Â
"Lukas [Sunesson] had a tremendous individual effort to put us up 2-0," Bennett said. "He's one of the strongest, fastest players in our conference and he's been a handful for the opposition this season. He had his just reward today."
Â
Luka Prpa, who made his first start of the season on Tuesday night, played a season-high 58 minutes, notching two shots on the evening.
Â
Redshirt freshman keeper Jackson Weyman saved two shots and earned his second clean sheet of the season.
Â
With the win, MU moves to 3-3-1 on the year while UW drops to 2-6. The Golden Eagles have taken two out of the last three from the Badgers in Madison.
