The Golden Eagles improve to 3-0 in BIG EAST play
MILWAUKEE—The 10th-ranked Marquette volleyball team continued to roll as the Golden Eagles earned their seventh consecutive win in a 3-1 (22-25, 26-24, 25-23, 25-18) comeback victory over St. John's on Saturday evening.
Marquette (13-2, 3-0) was led by senior Allie Barber with 16 kills and four blocks, while Kaitlyn Lines tallied eight kills. Hope Werch and Ellie Koontz added six kills apiece, while three other MU players connected on five kills in a balanced attack. Werch also collected a team-best 16 digs in the victory.
Setters Lauren Speckman and Sarah Rose dished out 22 and 20 assists, respectively and Martha Konovodoff added 12 digs.
After dropping the first set to the Red Storm, the Golden Eagles bounced back in the second frame to even the match at 1-1. Marquette trailed St. John's 17-10 in the third set before mounting a hefty comeback, slowly chipping away at the deficit to tie the score at 19-19. The teams traded points back-and-forth, but a service ace from Madeline Mosher gave MU a 23-22 lead and a kill from Koontz followed by an ace from Speckman sealed the comeback win and pushed the Golden Eagles in front for the 2-1 lead in the match.
Marquette jumped out early in the fourth set and never relinquished a lead, winning the final frame, 25-18.
St. John's (9-6, 1-1) had three players with double digit kills, while Efrosini Alexakou and Rachele Rastelli each recorded a double-double. Erica DiMaulo dished out a match-high 38 assists.
The Golden Eagles will travel for a mid-week match at Xavier on Wednesday, Oct. 2. First serve is set for 11 a.m. CT.
