The Golden Eagles notched their second win in a row over a Big Ten team
ST. PAUL, Minnesota – Freshman Josie Kelderman scored her first collegiate goal for the Marquette University women's soccer team in the 42nd minute of a 1-0 victory over Minnesota on Thursday evening at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium in St. Paul.
Kelderman settled an Emily Hess set piece at the top of the 18-yard box and ripped the shot to the right upper 90 past Minnesota goalkeeper Maddie Nielsen. The free kick from Hess came along the goal line to the left of the box after a foul on a deep MU throw-in, and was cleared to the 18 by a U-M defender.
The win is the second in a row over a Big Ten opponent for the Golden Eagles (2-3-0), who downed Michigan, 1-0, in double overtime on Sunday, Sept. 1 at home. Marquette was outshot 13-4 for the game, but reigning BIG EAST Conference Goalkeeper of the Week Maddy Henry made nine saves in net for her 21st career shutout.
Henry made six saves in the first half, but none bigger than her stop on a Celina Nummerdor penalty kick after Addie Shock was called for a foul in the box in the 25th minute. The Gophers outshot MU, 9-2, in the opening frame and had the game's first nine shots. Marquette sophomore Madison Burrier and Kelderman recorded the only shots over the final 13 minutes of the first half.
The Gophers (0-3-2), who won the 2018 Big Ten Tournament Championship, dropped their second match in a row and are winless in five matches this season.
The Golden Eagles return home to host Utah State on Sunday, Sept. 8 at Valley Fields. The 1 p.m. match will feature MU's ever-popular petting zoo at the east end of the Valley Fields bleachers.
