Emily Hess scored MU's lone goal off a corner kick
MILWAUKEE – Senior defender Emily Hess scored the lone goal for the Golden Eagles in their 5-1 loss to the Utah State Aggies Sunday afternoon at Valley Fields.
The goal by Hess was scored directly off a corner kick in the 71st minute. The score was her first of the season and second of her career at MU.
"I just tried to bend it to the back post," Hess said. "This time it just swung in a little bit more and it found the back of the net."
Although the shots were tied at 18 apiece for the game, USU was able to capitalize on its chances early on and built a 3-0 lead by halftime. The game was tied 0-0 after 29 minutes of play before Sidney Barlow broke the scoreless tie in the 30th minute. The Aggies went on to score two more in the next seven minutes of action to break the game open.
The Golden Eagles came out aggressively in the second half and outshot the Aggies 12-8. However, it was USU that broke through first in the final half of play with a goal from Kami Warner in the 66th minute.
MU got on the board in the 71st minute with the goal from Hess, but USU forward Alecia Robinson added one more insurance goal for her team in the 83rd minute. The assist on the goal went to Ashley Cordozo, who finished the match with a game-high four points (one goal, two assists).
The Golden Eagles will be back in action next Sunday, Sept. 15 in a crosstown battle against the University of Milwaukee. The match will start at 7 p.m. at Engelmann Stadium in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
