MILWAUKEE – Milwaukee's Mackenzie Schill scored a 105th minute match winner off a corner kick as the Marquette University women's soccer team fell, 1-0, in double overtime at Engelmann Stadium on Sunday evening.
Goalkeeper Maddy Henry made six saves for the Golden Eagles (2-5-0) and appeared to have the ball off a Gaby Schwartz corner kick. But Schill was able to get her leg on the ball to beat Henry at the near post.
McKaela Schmelzer and Julia Barajas were credited with assists for the Panthers (7-1-0), who held a 9-0 edge in corner kicks on the night. Milwaukee also led 20-9 in shots overall.
Barajas had a pair of good looks in the final four minutes of regulation as Henry denied her in the 87th minute and she missed a through ball near the goal box two minutes later.
The Panthers held a 6-4 advantage in shots through the first 45 minutes of scoreless soccer. Henry notched a pair of saves in the opening frame, including the game's first in the second minute and a late stop on Barajas in the 43rd minute.
Sophomore midfielder Katrina Wetherell had two of the best looks of the first half for the Golden Eagles with the latest a shot on goal in the 34th minute. Her first shot came on a set piece in the 24th minute that sailed over the cage after moving around the wall of Milwaukee defenders.
Sunday marked the 28th meeting all-time between the cross-town foes and the series is now tied 10-10-8. Marquette is 4-5-5 against the Panthers at Englemann.
The Golden Eagles return to action at 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 20 against Northern Illinois at Valley Fields as the first match of a doubleheader with the MU men. MU then wraps non-conference action in the return of an in-season home-and-home with Colorado State on Sunday afternoon.
