Spingola leads five players in double figures with 17 points
MILWAUKEE—For the fourth consecutive season the Marquette University women's basketball team has recorded a 20-win season as the Golden Eagles defeated Butler,76-54, on Sunday afternoon at the Al McGuire Center.
Five players recorded double figures for the first time this season as senior Isabelle Spingola led the team with 17 points, including five shot from long range, junior Selena Lott and freshman Camryn Taylor each totaled 13 points, while redshirt junior Lauren Van Kleunen and senior Altia Anderson added 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Anderson tallied her second career double-double as she also took down a game-high 12 boards. This was Anderson's second double-double of the season. Van Kleunen helped hand out the ball with a team-high six assists to her teammates as Marquette (20-6, 11-4) combined to pass out 21 assists, marking the 11th game this season with 20-or more helpers.
MU started off strong and led the entire game, holding a 16-point lead at the end of the first quarter, while holding Butler to just a 26.7 shooting percentage from the field, and just 30 percent on the day.
Half (38) of Marquette's points came in the paint, led by Van Kleunen and Taylor's efforts down low, while the squad dominated the backboards to outrebound the Bulldogs (17-8, 9-5) 37-22.
The Golden Eagles finished the day shooting 56.9 (29-51) percent from the field and 46.2 (6-13) percent from behind the arc. It was the third time this season MU shot better than 50 percent from the floor.
Kristen Spolyar led Butler with 16 points, followed by Katherine Strong with 14.
The win keeps Marquette solidly in second place in the BIG EAST standings in front of Butler with three regular season games remaining.
