Emily Cooper tallied a hat trick and six draw controls
MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University women's lacrosse team moved to 2-0 at home this season with an 18-11 victory over Canisius on Friday afternoon at Valley Fields.
Â
Nine different Golden Eagles scored goals today and six had multi-goal games. Emily Cooper, Megan Menzuber and Lydia Foust each had hat tricks to pace MU's impressive offensive output.
Â
"We had a really balanced effort today and there's a ton we can take away from this game and grow off of," MU head coach Meredith Black said. "Canisius was scrappy and aggressive, they played us tough. We did a good job of playing our game in the second half and were able to come away with a win."
Â
Junior midfielder Emily Cooper came into today's game with zero career goals but left the first 30 minutes with her first-ever hat trick. She also finished with six draw controls and leads the team with 25 overall this season.
Â
Her performance helped MU get out to an 8-4 lead in the first half before Canisius scored three unanswered goals to cut the lead to one at halftime. The Golden Griffins tacked on another early in the second half to tie the game at eight, but the Golden Eagles scored eight of the next nine goals to take control of the game.
Â
Megan Menzuber scored all three of her goals in the second half and Lydia Foust set a new single-game career-best with three goals as well.
Â
One of the keys to a strong second half was the play of junior goalie Sophia Leva, who made nine saves (career-high) in the final 30 minutes after entering the game at halftime.
Â
The Golden Eagles won the draw control battle 22-9 and outshot Canisius 40-26. Ellie Henry led the team with seven DC's, which is a new single-game best for her.
Â
"This is probably the closest team I've been on," Cooper said. "Our connections off the field have transferred on the field and it's just really special to be a part of."
