Lacrosse sets program goal record in 18-6 win at Detroit Mercy

PONTIAC, Michigan – The Marquette University men's lacrosse team used hat tricks from Ryan Fazio, Peter Henkhaus and Chris Kirschner to set a program record for goals in a 18-6 victory over Detroit Mercy at Ultimate Soccer Arenas on Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Eagles (3-1) started three freshmen on attack and received goals from all six offensive starters. In addition to MU's three hat tricks, freshman Jake Stegman scored the first two goals of his career, as did classmate Griffin Fries.
Ryan Birney scored a man-up goal for the Titans (2-2) to open play before Anthony Orsini got MU on the board at the 11:07 mark of the first quarter. Stegman scored his first of the year less than two minutes later and Marquette led the rest of the way.
In total 10 players scored for the Golden Eagles, whose 47 shots are four shy of a program-best 51 recorded last season against Detroit. After recording 24 turnovers and eight failed clears last week against Jacksonville, MU responded with only one failed clear in 22 attempts and 14 total turnovers.
Marquette led 8-3 at the half and posted five goals in each of the third and fourth quarters as it built its lead throughout the final 30 minutes.
Junior John Hulsman played 54:31 in net for MU and made five saves, while allowing five UDM goals. Senior Chris Rolfing played the final 5:29 of the fourth quarter and made one stop.
Marquette is now 7-1 all-time against Detroit Mercy, including a mark of 3-0 against the Titans in the state of Michigan.
Fazio also recorded a pair of assists for a new career-high five points.
