PHILADELPHIA – The Marquette University men's lacrosse team dropped a 13-11 decision at Drexel on Saturday afternoon at Vidas Field in Philadelphia.
Chris Kirschner led the Golden Eagles (3-2) with his third-straight hat trick, while Jake Stegman posted six points on two goals and four assists, just one point shy of Conor Gately's program freshman record of seven from 2013.
Marquette jumped out to a 5-3 lead after notching a 14-3 advantage in shots in the first quarter but was outshot in each of the final three frames. MU did hold a 40-36 edge in shots against a Drexel team that scored 24 points in its last game on Tuesday against Robert Morris.
Collin Mailman's first two of three goals gave the Dragons (2-2) an early 2-0 lead before four-straight scores for MU. Drexel pulled back in front at the half 7-5 thanks to four straight scores, but MU rallied to tie things 7-7 to start the second half.
Kirschner's final goal tied the game at 11 with 5:22 to play, but Ryan Genord scored his fifth to give DU the 12-11 advantage just 40 seconds later.
Sophomore face-off specialist Thomas Washington won 17-of-26 draws, picked up 12 ground balls and scored a career-high two goals.
The meeting was the first in program history between the two squads.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Saturday, March 7 at 11 a.m. against Robert Morris at Valley Fields. The game is part of a doubleheader with the MU women.
