The Golden Eagles finish second in the BIG EAST standings
MILWAUKEE—It was a sweet Senior Day celebration for Altia Anderson and Isabelle Spingola as the Marquette women's basketball team upset No. 16/15 DePaul, 90-83 on Sunday afternoon.
The Golden Eagles (22-7, 13-5) finish the BIG EAST season in second place and have earned the No. 2 seed in the 2020 BIG EAST Women's Basketball Tournament. MU will face the winner of the No. 7 and No. 10 seed matchup on Saturday, March 7 at 6 p.m. CT at Wintrust Arena in Chicago.
For the second time this season two Golden Eagles recorded 20+ points as redshirt junior Lauren Van Kleunen led with 22 points and junior Selena Lott connected for 20. Freshman Jordan King added 16 points, while Anderson tallied 10 points and took down 12 rebounds for her third career double-double.
It was a true team effort as Chloe Marotta took down nine rebounds, including five offensive, while Lott grabbed eight. As a team Marquette outrebounded the Blue Demons (25-5, 15-3), 55-36.
Marquette worked DePaul in the paint with 52 points coming from inside and scored 27 points off of fast breaks. The Golden Eagles withstood a late DePaul surge after holding a 22-point lead in the third quarter and finished the game connecting on 49.3 (36-73) percent from the floor.
The Blue Demons were led by Lexi Held's 25 points as four other DePaul players recorded double digits.
This was the first career win over a ranked opponent for head coach Megan Duffy, in her first year at Marquette and third year overall.
