MU will play 13 games this spring
MILWAUKEE – Head coach Louis Bennett announced the Marquette University men's soccer slate for the 2021 spring campaign on Wednesday morning.
The Golden Eagles, who went 8-9-1 in 2019 and made the BIG EAST tournament for the second year in a row, will play nine of their 13 scheduled games inside the Valley Fields dome.
"We're very thankful to get the opportunity to play this spring," Bennett said. "Our staff and administration worked extremely hard to put together this schedule and we're set to play five non-conference teams who are going to challenge us in a number of different ways."
MU 's season-opener on Wednesday, Feb. 3 is a non-conference game against Loyola Chicago inside the Valley Fields bubble.
Following the tilt against Loyola, coach Bennett and company will host Northern Illinois on Sunday, Feb. 7. MU defeated NIU in 2019 at Valley Fields on the back of two free kick goals by Josh Coan.
Saint Louis will come to town six days later on Feb. 13 to wrap up the first portion of out-of-conference play. The Billikens defeated the Golden Eagles 6-2 in 2019.
After the game against SLU, BIG EAST play starts up. Due to precautions set by the BIG EAST, MU will play home-and-homes against the western-most teams in the conference, which includes Butler, Creighton, DePaul and Xavier.
The top two teams from the west and the top two teams from the east (Georgetown, Providence, Seton Hall, St. John's and Villanova) will advance to the BIG EAST semifinals, which are tentatively slated for Wednesday, April 17.
MU kicks off conference play at home against Creighton on Feb. 13. Following that, MU will hit the road for the first time in 2021 for games at DePaul (March 6) and Butler (March 10). MU outlasted both clubs in 2019, defeating DePaul 1-0 and Butler 3-2.
The Xavier Musketeers travel to Milwaukee to complete the first half of conference play on St. Patrick's Day. MU came from behind to beat Xavier 2-1 on the road in their last matchup.
The Golden Eagles start the back half of conference play in Omaha, Neb., against Creighton on Saturday, March 20. They'll follow that up with two home games in the same week against DePaul (March 24) and Butler (March 27).
They'll add in one more non-conference game against Chicago State at home (April 3) before closing the spring 2021 regular season at Xavier on Saturday, April 10.
If MU qualifies, it'll begin BIG EAST tournament action on April 17, and as of now the higher seed will host the matchup. The conference tournament title game is scheduled for Saturday, April 20, and will once again be played at the home field of the highest remaining seed.
"Our coaching staff is very excited about the potential of this team," Bennett said. "We feel good about our depth and talent across the pitch and we can't wait to see them in action next month."
The Golden Eagles return six starters and 15 letterwinners from their 2019 team. They also add 13 newcomers to offset the losses of four senior All-BIG EAST selections, including MLS SuperDraft picks Patrick Seagrist (first team) and Luka Prpa (second team). Connor Alba and Josh Coan both made the third team.
Live stats and streaming for home games will both be available on GoMarquette.com. Road game streaming is still to be determined and live stats can be found on the home team's website. Game times are still being finalized.
Schedules and championship information is subject to change based on local COVID-19 developments. All Marquette home competitions will continue to be held without fans until further notice in accordance with state and local guidelines. MU is working with health officials to evaluate a potential return for fans in some capacity this season.
