Marquette Concludes Regular Season Hosting No. 1 Georgetown
The Marquette University men's soccer team (6-8-1, 3-5-1 BIG EAST) concludes its 2021 regular season this weekend with one final match at home against No. 1 Georgetown Hoyas on Saturday, Oct. 30, at 7:05 p.m. (CST) at Valley Fields.
Entering the match as the top-ranked team in the nation, Georgetown (13-1, 7-1 BIG EAST) has spent the majority of the season atop the United Soccer Coaches Poll. The Hoyas boast one of the best goal differentials in the NCAA, out-pacing opponents by a combined score of 30-11 this season. The Georgetown offense is led by junior forward Stefan Stojanovic, who has scored a team-best seven goals. Goalkeepers Giannis Nikopolidis and Ethan Koehler have split time in the net, making eight and six starts, respectively.
This will mark the third time in program history that Marquette has taken on a top-ranked team, the previous opportunities coming in a 3-1 loss against Creighton in 2015, and a 2-1 loss vs Notre Dame in 2014.
MU To Honor Seniors on Saturday
Marquette will hold a Senior Night ceremony prior to Saturday's contest to honor the 10 student-athletes who will be playing their final game at Valley Fields. Among those being honored are midfielder Christian Albelo (Alexandria, Va.), forward AJ Franklin (Streamwood, Ill.), forward Christian Gennaro (Vigevano, Italy), forward Nick Guido (Matthews, N.C.), defender Gabe Kash (Marshall, Ill.), defender Clay Smith (Chesapeake, Va.), goalkeeper Cedrik Stern (Friedberg, Germany), forward Sam Thornton (Rotherham, England), midfielder Zak Wegner (Hartland, Wis.) and manager Alec Wons (Kansas City, Mo.).
Post-Season Possibilities on the Line
Currently tied for seventh in the conference standings, the Golden Eagles still have hopes of qualifying for the six-team BIG EAST tournament. Marquette enters Saturday's match in need of at least a draw in order to keep its post season hopes alive. A favorable result against the Hoyas is pivotal to Marquette's qualifying efforts, but even a win won't guarantee MU a spot in the tournament.
Series History
Historically, Georgetown has had the upper-hand in the series between the Golden Eagles and the Hoyas, owning a 14-1-3 overall record. Marquette's lone win in the series came in Milwaukee on Oct. 17, 2009, a 1-0 victory. The teams did not meet last season due to the COVID-shortened year.
