Golden Eagles travel to Omaha for next matchup
MILWAUKEE - Marquette University men's soccer (4-5-1, 1-2-1 BIG EAST) suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Xavier (7-4-0, 1-3-0 BIG EAST) on Wednesday night at Valley Fields.
The Musketeers scored once in the first half and again less than 10 minutes into the second half to take a 2-0 lead over MU.Â
In the 84th minute, redshirt freshman forward Beto Soto recorded the lone tally for the Golden Eagles, firing a left-footed laser past the XU keeper. Gabe Kash and Zyan Andrade recorded assists on the goal.
Marquette continued to pressure in the final five minutes, but could not find the back of the net again and suffered a second BIG EAST defeat.
"It took us a lot of time to get going, which was disappointing. They smothered us and did exactly what they wanted to do, and we couldn't get enough quality looks to stick around," said Marquette head coach Louis Bennett. "When we create opportunities, we have the players to finish them, we just didn't create many opportunities. Winning at home is our expectation, and now we need to dust ourselves off and prepare for a very talented Creighton team."
MU goalie Chandler Hallwood made five saves on 13 shots faced in the match. Soto led the Golden Eagles in shots, while five other players placed a shot near the cage.
Justus Kauppinen and Cameron Phillips scored the goals for the Musketeers, with four players generating an assist in the match. Keeper Matthew Rosenberg recorded two saves in his 90 minutes between the pipes.
UP NEXT: Marquette will travel to Omaha for a Saturday matchup against the Creighton Bluejays (3-5-1, 0-3-0 BIG EAST).
