Marquette Hits the Road to Face Creighton, UConn
The Marquette University men's soccer team (4-5-1, 1-2-1 BIG EAST) heads out this week for a two-match road trip against BIG EAST opponents. The Golden Eagles will first travel to Omaha, Nebraska, to take on Creighton on Saturday, Oct. 9, at 7 p.m. (CST), before heading east to face the UConn Huskies on Wednesday, Oct. 13, at 6 p.m.
Creighton enters Saturday's contest in search of its first win in conference play. The Bluejays (3-5-1, 0-3-0 BIG EAST) currently sit in last place in the BIG EAST standings, but have won two of their past three games with victories over Omaha and UIC. This season, Creighton is led by senior striker Diego Gutierrez, who has recorded four goals and an assist.
After a 4-2 start to the season, UConn is also winless in the BIG EAST, currently with a 4-4-1 overall record and an 0-3-1 mark against conference foes, despite scoring 11 goals while allowing just six. Their 0.628 goals against average ranks 17th in the nation. All four of the Huskies' wins this season have come at home. Freshman forward Okem Chime leads the squad with three goals this year, while two players have tallied four assists.
Sunesson Named to BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll
After scoring a goal and assisting on another in MU's draw against No. 22/23 Providence, redshirt junior forward Lukas Sunesson was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. Just minutes into the second half, the Swede tapped the ball through traffic to find teammate Zyan Andrade, who capitalized on the pass to score the first goal of the match in the 47th minute. Later in the half, Sunesson followed through on a shot which was deflected by the Friars' goalkeeper to find the back of the net in the 86th minute.
Golden Eagles Post Draw Against Providence, Fall to Xavier
MU is coming off a two-match homestand at Valley Fields, drawing with No. 23/22 Providence and coming up just short in its contest against Xavier. Against the Friars, Marquette used goals from Zyan Andrade in the 47th minute and Lukas Sunesson in the 86th minute to take a 2-0 lead, but a late push by the Friars evened things up. Two extra time periods were not enough to break the stalemate as the Golden Eagles picked up their first draw of the season.
Against the Musketeers, MU fell behind early on a 24th minute Xavier goal, and then surrendered a second early into the second half in the 53rd minute. Marquette stayed resilient, using an 84th minute goal from Beto Soto to bring the match back within one score. The late push came up short, however, as they couldn't find a second goal to pull even.
