Elsi Twombly scored the lone goal against the Ramblers
MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University women's soccer team picked up a 1-0 exhibition victory over Loyola Chicago on Sunday afternoon at Valley Fields.
Elsi Twombly, recently named the BIG EAST Conference Player of the Week for her play in MU's opening weekend on Feb. 5-7, scored the lone goal in the 50th minute. Redshirt junior Meredith McGuire registered the assist against Marquette head coach Frank Pelaez's former squad.
"It was a great chance for us to get out there and compete," Marquette head coach Frank Pelaez said. "It was an opportunity to have my best friend bring is team over and we were able to help both squads get better. Though it was a little weird that when I yelled anything out both teams looked over at me out of habit."
Pelaez served as an assistant under LUC head coach Barry Bimbi from 2015-19, who himself was a former four-year MU assistant.
"They are such a good team to get experience and plan against," Pelaez said. "They have been to the NCAA tournament in each of the last two years and they have experience and play a confident style. I was so proud of our team for finding a way to get a result and how bad they wanted it. We were able to hold our own and are not a finished product, but I was pleased with how well the team responded to the challenge."
The Golden Eagles return to action in their second exhibition contest against Northern Illinois on Sunday afternoon at Valley Fields. The Feb. 21 match will air live on GoMarquette.com. MU resumes regular season play on Thursday, March 4 against Creighton in its BIG EAST opener.
