Christopher J. Swift | 1979-83 | Evanston, Illinois
Â
Current Location:Â New Canaan, Connecticut
Employer/Profession:Â I am proud to be the Chairman and CEO of The Hartford, a national leader in property and casualty insurance, group benefits and mutual funds, where I am responsible for the company's strategy and growth, capital allocation, performance, culture and leadership.
After graduation from Marquette with a degree in accounting, I became a certified public accountant and started my career with KPMG LLP, where I audited financial services organizations and was eventually appointed head of Global Insurance Industry Practice. I moved from there to American International Group (AIG), where I held senior leadership and finance roles. I joined The Hartford in 2010 as executive vice president and chief financial officer. I became CEO in 2014 and Chairman of the Board of Directors in 2015.
I believe every business leader has an obligation to make a positive impact on society, and I am personally and professionally committed to building safe, strong and successful communities, while providing career enhancing opportunities for our employees.
I am a signatory to the CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion Pledge and serve on the governing committee for its Racial Equity Fellowship initiative. I also advocate for public policy reforms to address the opioid crisis and encourage business leaders to work to dispel the addiction stigma that is fueling the crisis.
What I remember best about Marquette:Â First, I remember fundamentally the teaching of faith, service and exploring knowledge that Marquette emphasizes as a Catholic Jesuit university to help prepare students for the future. Second, I remember the life-long friendships I formed that have stayed with me through the years. The most important of these being with Mary, my wife. Mary and I were set up on a date at Marquette in 1981. We now have four grown children, one of whom is also a Marquette alum.Fun Fact:Â Despite living in five different cities over the past four decades, we still consider the Midwest home, and we root for our beloved Chicago sports teams. In 2017, it was an honor and privilege to be elected to the Marquette Board of Trustees.
