Jordan King scored 13 of her team-high 21 points in the first half
MILWAUKEE -Â The Marquette women's basketball team fell 87-82 to the No. 20/21 DePaul Blue Demons on Sunday afternoon at the Al McGuire Center.
Sophomore guard Jordan King scored a career-high 21 points while dishing out seven assists for the Golden Eagles. Lauren Van Kleunen had 21 points and five boards while Selena Lott had 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Camryn Taylor (10 points) joined them in double figures, but MU fell just short in the first of two scheduled games against its rival this season.
After a back-and-forth start, the Blue Demons went on a 10-2 run to take a 10 point lead at 36-26. MU responded with a 14-6 run of its own to head into the halftime break trailing 42-40.
DePaul exploded out of the gates in the first few minutes of the third quarter, scoring 19 of the half's first 23 points to earn what would be its largest lead of the game, 61-44. Coach Duffy called a timeout to talk it over with her team. The Golden Eagles then went on a 15-2 run to close the third quarter, cutting the deficit to just four points heading into the final frame.
MU took its first lead since the 5:58 mark of the first quarter after a 3-pointer by Claire Kaifes and a cutting layup from Jordan King put the Golden Eagles up 64-63. 10 seconds later, DPU took the lead on a pair of free throws and held it until the 3:21 mark of the fourth quarter, when a Camryn Taylor layup put MU back up 78-77. The Blue Demons retook the lead for the final time on their next possession and outscored the Golden Eagles 10-4 to finish the game.
Deja Church led DePaul with 24 points while Sonya Morris had 23 and Dee Bekelja had 18. Lexi Held chipped in 17 for the Blue Demons.
POSTGAME NOTES:
-Marquette tied or won the rebounding battle for the 45th time in the 48 games of the Coach Duffy era (37 to 34 edge).
-Lauren Van Kleunen (21 points) reached double figures for the 12th time this season and 42nd time in her career. It was her third 20-point game of the season.
-Camryn Taylor (10 points, six rebounds) reached double figures for the fifth time in the past six games.
-Claire Kaifes hit multiple 3-pointers for the fifth time this season. She hit three-of-seven 3-pointers Sunday.
-Jordan King (21 points) reached double figures in scoring for the seventh time this season. 21 points is a new career-high and it's the second time she reached 20 points this season.
