MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University men's lacrosse team will play its lone non-conference game of the season on Wednesday afternoon against No. 8 Notre Dame at Arlotta Stadium in Notre Dame, Indiana.
The game will air live on the ACC Network with Anish Shroff (play-by-play) Paul Carcaterra on the call. Live statistics will be available through UND.com.
The Golden Eagles are still in search of their first victory after losses in their first four BIG EAST Conference matches. Marquette fell, 12-8, on Saturday afternoon to Providence in Milwaukee, where redshirt freshman goalie Sean Richard made a career-high 16 saves, just two shy of the program record.
Redshirt junior attackman Griffin Fleming posted a hat trick and assist in the loss and now leads the Golden Eagles with 10 goals and six assists on the year. Redshirt freshman Devon Cowan is right behind him with 10 goals and four assists this season.
While Richard has started two of MU's four games this season, the defensive unit is led by the multifaceted Mason Woodward and Zach Granger at close defense. Woodward leads the Golden Eagles with 25 ground balls and nine caused turnovers this season, averaging over five ground balls and two caused turnovers per contest.
The Golden Eagles began the season with a narrow 10-9 loss to then-No. 9 Denver and fell by a pair of goals to Villanova, 16-14, before the losses to Georgetown and the Friars.
Notre Dame has picked up a pair of victories this season over Robert Morris, 19-7, on Feb. 27 and a 12-6 win over Bellarmine on March 6. Sophomore attackman Pat Kavanagh leads the Irish with 15 points on two goals and 13 assists, while junior Quinn McCahon is ND's leading scorer with seven goals. Notre Dame also boasts a talented pair of face-off specialists in Kyle Gallagher and Charles Leonard, who have combined to win 78.4% at the dot this season.
Marquette is 0-8 all-time against Notre Dame in program history, with three of those losses coming by just one goal. The Irish have been ranked in the top-10 in all but one meeting and are 5-0 when playing at Arlotta Stadium. Marquette head coach Andrew Stimmel was an assistant coach on the 2016 MU team that lost in overtime, 8-7, at Arlotta Stadium. That ND team was ranked No. 1 in the country in the media poll and second in the coaches' poll.
Following the St. Patrick's Day matchup at Notre Dame, the Golden Eagles will face St. John's for the first time this season on Saturday, March 20 in Queens.
