Sunesson scores for fifth time
MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University men's soccer team (5-1-1, 2-1-1 BIG EAST) claimed a 2-1 win over Xavier (3-5-1, 0-3-1 BIG EAST) on Wednesday afternoon in BIG EAST Conference action at Valley Fields.
The Golden Eagles opened the scoring on forward Lukas Sunesson's team-leading fifth marker of the campaign. Sunesson, a cross from Alex Mirsberger and Xavier netminder Matthew Rosenberg all met in front of the net at the same time and the result was the ball finding the back of the frame for the 1-0 advantage.
Xavier answered back less than five minutes later to even the score at 1-1, but Marquette turned the momentum back in its favor courtesy of a Manuel Cukaj header. Cukaj perfectly placed a Zak Wegner free kick past the keeper from 12 yards out and MU had a 2-1 advantage at the intermission on his first goal of the year.
The Musketeers had a number of chances in the second half, but MU keeper Chandler Hallwood was up to the task and finished the afternoon with seven saves, including multiple on point-blank opportunities.
