The Golden Eagles (0-2, 0-2 BIG EAST) are coming off a 16-14 loss to Villanova on Feb. 27 in which the game was tied at 14 until a VU goal with seven and a half minutes remaining. Redshirt freshman attackman Devon Cowan led MU with new career highs of four goals and six points on his way to weekly honor roll recognition by the BIG EAST.
Marquette held a ground ball advantage against the Wildcats but were out-shot by 12 (51-39) and struggled to gain possession on the faceoff (14-of-33).
Cowan leads MU with six goals and eight points this season, while fellow attackman Griffin Fleming has five goals and seven points. In net the Golden Eagles have rotated three goalies through two games with Gabe Stein and Sean Richard each playing 30 minutes and John Hulsman has seen 60 minutes of action. Stein came in to start the second half against the Wildcats and made 12 saves in a relief appearance.
The 3-0 Hoyas (2-0 BIG EAST) are rolling this season, limiting opposing teams to just 2.33 goals per game while posting 17.3 goals themselves. Georgetown began the season with a 16-1 win over Villanova on Feb. 21 and knocked off St. John's, 19-1, in its second league game on Feb. 27. GU also defeated Mount St. Mary's, 17-5, in their first non-conference game on Tuesday evening in Maryland.
All-American Jake Carraway leads a high-powered Georgetown offense with 16 goals and 23 points, and recently became GU's career leader in both categories. He ranks second in the nation with 5.33 goals per game and is third with 7.67 points per contest.
Goalie Owen McElroy leads a stout Georgetown defense and ranks as the NCAA Division I leader with a 1.92 goals against average. He earned BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week honors on Monday after posting 10 saves against the Red Storm on Saturday.
Marquette is 5-3 all-time against the Hoyas (2-2 in Washington) and have won each of its last four meetings since a 2015 BIG EAST semifinal loss (12-8) at Villanova. All four of those victories and six of the eight games in series history have been decided by just one goal. Marquette head coach Andrew Stimmel was on the MU sideline for a 9-8 victory over Georgetown on March 26, 2016 in his lone season as a Marquette assistant coach.
Following this week's action in the nation's capital, Marquette hosts Providence at Valley Fields on March 13, prior to a midweek, St. Patrick's Day, matchup with No. 9 Notre Dame at Arlotta Stadium.
