
Lacrosse falls 20-13 at No. 4 Georgetown

WASHINGTON – The Marquette University men's lacrosse team led early in the third quarter before falling to No. 4 Georgetown, 20-13, on Saturday at Cooper Field in Washington, D.C.
Griffin Fleming led the Golden Eagles (0-3, 0-3 BIG EAST) with a career-high five points (two goals, three assists), while Ryan Fazio scored a career-best four goals.
Marquette led 4-3 late in the first on Fazio's second score and he tied the contest at 8-8 going into the half. Redshirt senior Connor McClelland scored his only goal in the opening minute of the third quarter to give the Golden Eagles their last lead of the game, 9-8.
From there, the Hoyas scored 12 of the next 13 points to build a commanding 20-10 lead midway through the fourth quarter.
TJ Haley led Georgetown (4-0, 3-0 BIG EAST) with a game-high six points (one goal, five assists) and five GU players notched hat tricks, led by four goals from Dylan Hess. All-American Jake Carraway entered the game second in the nation in goals and third in points and posted a hat trick and pair of assists in the win. Goalie
Owen McElroy, who entered Saturday's matchup as the NCAA Division I leader with a 1.92 goals against average, allowed 10 goals and made 10 saves in 54:16.
Gabe Stein made 10 saves in his first start of the year for MU, which combined to go 6-of-36 on faceoffs. Mason Woodward picked up eight ground balls.
Marquette is 5-4 all-time against the Hoyas (2-3 in Washington) and had won each of its previous four meetings since a 2015 BIG EAST semifinal loss (12-8) at Villanova Stadium. All four of those victories and six of the previous eight games in series history had been decided by just one goal.
Marquette next hosts Providence at Valley Fields on March 13, prior to a midweek, St. Patrick's Day, matchup with No. 9 Notre Dame at Arlotta Stadium.
