CHICAGO - The Marquette University women's soccer team won its BIG EAST Conference opener on Sunday afternoon with a 2-0 triumph over DePaul at Wish Field in Chicago.
Junior Katrina Wetherell scored in the opening minutes of the second half and freshman Elsi Twombly struck in the 75th for the Golden Eagles (3-0, 1-0 BIG EAST) who played their first regular season contest since Feb. 7.
"The saying goes, 'Out of adversity cometh strength,' and that sums up the last few days for our ladies," Marquette head coach Frank Pelaez said. "I am proud of the way our group stuck together this week and came away with a 2-0 road win. We gave the team a game plan and they executed it. It was a total team effort to find a way and credit to DePaul for pushing us to our limit."
Wetherell's score came in the 47th minute after Marquette was out-shot 7-2 in the opening frame. Twombly's goal was the third in as many matches this year for the forward from Appleton, Wisconsin.
Fellow freshman Lauren Schill made six saves in her first start for the first clean sheet of her collegiate career. The Golden Eagles were out-shot 16-6 for the match.
Marquette leads in the all-time series against DePaul 16-6-2 following Sunday's victory.
The Golden Eagles continue BIG EAST action in a 2 p.m. Thursday kickoff on March 11 at Butler.
