Caroline Steller led MU with five goals
WASHINGTON, D.C. -Â The Marquette women's lacrosse team fell 20-10Â to Georgetown on Sunday afternoon in the series finale.
The Golden Eagles (5-7, 2-4 BIG EAST) were led by senior attacker Caroline Steller, who scored five goals. Shea Garcia netted a pair while three other Golden Eagles added one apiece. Sophia Leva saved 10 shots in net.
The two teams were dead even through the first 15 minutes of action. They went back-and-forth exchanging goals for the first eight tallies of the game. With the contest tied 4-4, however, the Hoyas (4-7, 3-3 BIG EAST) went on a 3-0 run to take a 7-4 lead, which led to a Golden Eagles timeout. Steller answered with her third goal of the afternoon right after the timeout to get MU back within two at 7-5. After two more GT goals, Shea Garcia and Steller tallied one each to cut the deficit to 9-7 at the half.
Steller scored four of her five goals in the first half while Garcia, Lydia Foust and Leigh Steiner added one apiece as well. Senior goalie Sophia Leva saved eight shots in the first 30 minutes of action. GT held a 10-7 edge in the draw circle at the half.
The Hoyas came out firing in the second half, quickly forcing a turnover which led to a goal and a 10-7 lead. They added two more goals in a two-minute stretch to take a then game-high five-goal lead. After scoring another to go up 13-7, MU answered back with two straight goals as Steller scored her fifth and Garcia added her second to trim the lead back to four at 13-9.
It was all Hoyas after that as they scored the next five goals to take an 18-9 lead and put the game out of reach.
With her second goal of the game, Steller became the 11th Golden Eagle in program history to reach 100 career points.
Kylie Hazen led Georgetown with five goals while Michaela Bruno and Katie Goldsmith tallied hat tricks for the Hoyas.
