The two teams will meet again Sunday at 1 p.m.
MILWAUKEE - The Marquette women's lacrosse team fell 16-6Â to the University of Denver on Friday afternoon in the first of two games this weekend.
Â
The Golden Eagles (5-8, 2-5 BIG EAST) one goal each from six different players. Lindsey Hill, Megan Menzuber and Leigh Steiner led the way with a goal and an assist each.
Â
The two teams were neck-and-neck through the first half of play. The Pioneers (9-1, 7-0 BIG EAST) scored the first two goals of the game before MU came roaring back with three straight to take a 3-2 lead. Denver scored the next two but the Golden Eagles ended the half scoring two of the last three, including a top-shelf snipe by Lindsey Hill to tie the game at five with 23 seconds left in the half.
Senior goalie Sophia Leva made six of her eight saves in the first 30 minutes to keep the Denver offense at bay.
The second half was a completely different story as the Pioneers started fast and accelerated to the finish line. They went on an 11-0 run through the first 26:17 of the second half to break the game open. Denver also won nine of the 13 second half draws and outshot the Golden Eagles, 23-8.
Â
A goal from Leigh Steiner with 3:43 put a halt to Denver's scoring run, but it wasn't enough to start a comeback for the home team.
Â
Eliza Radochonski led Denver with four goals while Bea Hehrins scored a hat trick and two assists. Three other Pioneers had two goals apiece.
