MU Falls to Seton Hall, 4-1

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The No. 16/17 Marquette men's soccer team fell 4-1 to the No. 12/11 Seton Hall Pirates on Thursday afternoon in the BIG EAST tournament semifinals in Washington, D.C.

Sam Thornton scored the lone goal for Marquette (8-2-1, 5-1-1 BIG EAST) in the 73rd minute off a cross from Lukas Sunesson. Besides the late goal, the BIG EAST semifinal match was all Seton Hall, which scored all four of its goals in the first 60 minutes of the game.

The Pirates (8-1-3, 5-1-2 BIG EAST) struck first in the sixth minute on a left-footed strike from outside the box from Mattias Sundell. The Pirates added their second goal of the game just over three minutes later on a header from Maurice Williams to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the first 10 minutes of the game.

MU was outshot 6-4 in the first half but never had any serious scoring chances.

The Pirates added two more goals in a two-minute span in the second half. Maurice Williams scored his second of the game in the 59th minute while C.J. Tibbling scored on a near-post strike just one minute and 27 seconds later to put the game out of reach.

Thornton scored his first goal as a Golden Eagle in the 73rd minute on a one-touch shot off a cross from Sunesson.

The Golden Eagles were outshot 12-10 but had six shots on goal.

Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Jackson Weyman (0-1-0) earned the start in net for the Golden Eagles. Third Team All-BIG EAST goalkeeper Chandler Hallwood did not make the trip due to health and safety protocols.
