Men earn No. 3 seed, women seeded eighth
The Marquette University men's and women's tennis teams will open play at the 2021 BIG EAST Conference Championships this week, hosted by the league in Cayce, N.C.
The men's team has earned the No. 3 seed in the eight-team field and will face No. 6 Villanova at 4 p.m. CT on Friday, April 23. The winner advances to the semifinals to face the St. John's/Xavier winner. MU didn't face the Wildcats in 2021, but finished 3-1 against teams in the field.
The women's team is seeded eighth in the 11-team field and will face No. 9 seed Georgetown at 8 a.m. CT on Thursday, April 22. The winner advances to face No. 1 seed Xavier in the quarterfinals at 8 a.m. CT on Friday. The Golden Eagles didn't face the Hoyas this spring, but dropped a 5-2 decision at Xavier last weekend.
The team champions for both the men and women earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships. Last year's tournament was cancelled because of Covid-19.
"We are looking forward to competing for a conference championship and the opportunity to earn a spot in the NCAA Championship," Director of Tennis Steve Rodecap said. "It's a fresh start for everyone and it's going to be great competition all week long.
