Marquette faces No. 1 seed Xavier Friday morning
The Marquette University women's tennis team (6-7) opened play at the 2021 BIG EAST Championship Thursday with a 4-0 win over Georgetown in Cayce, S.C.
With the victory, the Golden Eagles advance to the quarterfinals and will face No. 1 seed Xavier at 8 a.m. CT on Friday morning. The two teams met last weekend, with the Musketeer claiming a 5-2 win at home on Saturday, April 17.
The Golden Eagles made quick work of the short-handed Hoyas, clinching the doubles point with a win at the No. 1 position by Natalija Popovic and Giulia Turconi. The Hoyas had only five total players, so Marquette claimed default wins at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles.
Freshman Emilija Kojcic and sophomore Elisabeth Desmarais earned singles wins at No. 4 and 5, respectively.
"The team did a good job of taking care of business quickly today and we are excited about the opportunity to advance," head coach Steve Rodecap said. "Tomorrow provides a new challenge against a very good Xavier team."
