QUEENS, New York – Gabe Stein made 17 saves and Devon Cowan scored four times to lead the Marquette University men's lacrosse team past St. John's, 15-14, on Friday afternoon at DaSilva Memorial Field in Queens.
Cowan's final two scores lifted the Golden Eagles (4-8, 3-7 BIG EAST) to their third conference win of the year and Stein, the senior goalie, recorded a career-high 17 saves in his final collegiate game.
Redshirt senior Griffin Fleming twice gave Marquette a lead in the fourth quarter, but each time SJU's Connor Kalmus answered to tie things up for the Red Storm. Cowan gave MU the lead for good with 1:25 remaining an added the eventual winner on an empty net with 23 seconds left to play. SJU's Joe Madsen added a final score with seven seconds remaining before Thomas Washington won his 12th faceoff of the day to run out the clock.
Cowan's four scores push him to 30 on the season, making him just the fifth player in Marquette history to reach the mark in a single campaign. He is also the only second-year player to ever score more than 23 goals in a season at Marquette.
Stein made his entrance late in the first quarter in relief of John Hulsman after the Red Storm took a 5-2 lead. He made big save after big save down the stretch as the Golden Eagles reclaimed their first lead since 2-1 at 9-8 on an Anthony Orsini blast with 8:07 left in the third quarter.
The two squads traded leads from there until the Golden Eagles look command late on Cowan's goals. In total, the game featured seven ties.
St. John's (1-10, 0-10 BIG EAST) was on a COVID pause when it was slated to face the Golden Eagles on March 20, the date this game was originally scheduled.
Marquette is 8-1 all-time against the Red Storm and has won each of the last eight meetings, including a 9-8 overtime win earlier this season on April 14 at Valley Fields. The last game played in Queens resulted in a Marquette 11-10 overtime win on April 7, 2018.
