The No. 19/12 Marquette University men's soccer team (0-0-0) opens its 2021 campaign on Thursday, August 26 at 6:05 p.m. CT against Green Bay (0-0-0) at Valley Fields in non-conference action.

The Golden Eagles will wrap up the opening week against SIUE at 4 p.m. on Sunday, August 29 to conclude a doubleheader with the women's team.
Golden Eagles Earn Preseason National Recognition
Marquette, which finished ranked 14th in the country in 2020-21, finds itsef among the nation's best in the 2021 preseason polls.

Sunesson Claims More Accolades

The accolades continue to come in for forward Lukas Sunesson, who was named in recent weeks both Preseason All-BIG EAST and College Soccer News Preseason All-America Second Team.

The latest honors add to a growing number of accolades for the junior striker. In 2020-21, he also earned CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team and United Soccer Coaches First Team Scholar All-America recognition in the classroom and was a Second Team All-America and a MAC Hermann Trophy Semifinalist on the pitch. He was named to the United Soccer Coaches First Team All-East Region and made the All-BIG EAST First Team.

The Taby, Sweden native had a breakout season that saw him score a team-best six goals along with two assists.

While the Golden Eagles do welcome six talented freshment to the roster in 2021, the team is dominated by a strong group of veterans who have seen a wealth of experience.

Marquette features nine returning starters this season and 18 total letterwinners. Â Of the seven players to account for at least one goal last year, six are back in 2021. Â Of the 45 total points scored in the spring, 41 are represented by players set to compete this spring.

In goal, Chandler Hallwood is back in net after posting a 7-2-2 mark in 12 appearances and finishing with a 0.65 goals against average.
Golden Eagles Looking To Build On Historic Spring 2021 campaign

Despite having to replace four of his top six scorers and two MLS SuperDraft picks from the year prior, the Golden Eagles thrived through adversity, going 8-3-2 (5-1-1 BIG EAST) and taking home the BIG EAST Midwest Division title.

The Golden Eagles won their first three games by the score of 1-0, all with golden goals in overtime. Â MU went on to win five of its seven BIG EAST contests and a program-record six overtime games.Â
After making the BIG EAST tournament for the third season in a row, the Golden Eagles were selected to their first NCAA tournament since 2013. MU was paired with No. 4 Loyola Marymount, the West Coast Conference champions who came in with an unblemished record. After a 0-0 tie in regulation and two overtimes, the Golden Eagles emerged victoriously in penalty kicks, defeating the Lions, 3-1.Â
MU advanced to their second Sweet 16 in school history and first since 2013 and battled the No. 2 Indiana Hoosiers. An A.J. Franklin goal in the 44th minute put MU up 1-0 and it kept the lead all the way into the 71st minute. The Hoosiers tallied two goals in the final 19 minutes of game action to take down MU and end the historic season.
