Golden Eagles return to action Friday against UMKC at home
The Marquette University men's soccer team (2-0-0) held off SIUE (0-1-1) Sunday evening in non-conference action at Valley Fields.
The Golden Eagles took the early lead in the first half when forward Lukas Sunesson found the net at the 24:55 mark. The Cougars quickly answered back scoring in the 39th and 41st minutes to take a 2-1 advantage over the Golden Eagles entering halftime.
Less than two minutes into the start of the second half, Harvey Read was able to find the back of the net off a corner kick to tie the score at two goals apiece.
Freshman Edrey Caceres, who assisted on Read's goal, helped lead the rally in the second half scoring his first career goal to give the Golden Eagles a 3-2 lead at the 53:44 mark. Â
The Golden Eagles were able to find the net for a fourth time when Beto Soto worked free down the left side with a variety of moves and beat the keeper near post. The two-goal advantage didn't last long as Oskar Lenz scored the Cougars third goal of the match just 18 seconds later.
Netminder Chandler Hallwood finished with just two saves on the day, but one of them was on a penalty kick in the second half.
The Golden Eagles were able to hold onto the 4-3 advantage for the remainder of the contest to win their second match of the season.
The four goals in today's match were the most for the Golden Eagles since October, 8 2019 when they defeated Green Bay 6-1.
