MILWAUKEE — The No. 13/10 Marquette University men's soccer team (3-0-0) fended off visiting Kansas City (0-2-1) in its 2021 campaign on Friday, Sept. 3 at Valley Fields in non-conference action.
The Golden Eagles scored in the third minute, with a perfectly worked goal. Forward Christian Marquez scored his first goal of the season and the fourth of his career with a one-touch shot from forward Beto Soto's pass.
Kansas City scored an unassisted goal in the 21st minute from forward/midfielder Kazuki Kimura to level the playing field.
Marquette took charge before half with another goal. Soto added his name again to the score sheet, this time with his second goal of the season, fifth of his career. Forward Sam Thornton tallied an assist with a cross that just cleared the Kansas City netminder, and Soto finished off the chance with a header into the net.
The second half was a defensive battle with both teams having chances, but neither could find the net. The goalless second led Marquette to a win at home.
UP NEXT: The Golden Eagles will head on the road for a Labor Day contest against Tulsa (2-0-0) at 7 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 6.
