
Volleyball sweeps UTSA to open Marquette Invitational

Marquette plays its second match of the invitational at 7:30 p.m. CT on Friday.

MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's volleyball team beat the UTSA Roadrunners in three sets (25-18, 25-12, 25-17) in its first match of the Marquette Invitational.Â
Marquette was led by its dominant hitting, landing 46 kills in the sweep with a .357 hitting percentage. The Golden Eagles (7-2) were led by Savannah Rennie who tallied 10 kills with a .588 hitting percentage, while also contributing six digs and five blocks. The other boost came from Hannah Vanden Berg who hit at a .353 clip with eight kills and tallied 10 digs.
Vanden Berg and Rennie each had four kills in the opening set as Marquette posted a 25-18 win while hitting .421 (18-2-38). A much more dominating second set put Marquette up two sets to nothing at the break with a 25-12 win. In the third and final frame, the Golden Eagles started hot with a 7-1 run and maintained the lead to take the set, 25-17.
Marquette freshman Jenna Reitsma made her first career start at outside hitter and tallied six kills and 10 digs. Carly Skrabak also wore the libero jersey for the first time in her MU career and contributed eight digs.
Hunter Coppola led UTSA (3-7) with 10 kills and the Roadrunners hit a combined .112 (30-17-116).

NEXT UP: Marquette has one more match tonight against the visiting Wright State at 7:30 p.m. CT and then concludes the tournament with a 6 p.m. CT match on Saturday against UNI.Â
