Bulldogs visit Valley Fields for BIG EAST lidlifter
The Marquette University women's soccer team (4-3-0) wraps up its season-long four-match homestand on Thursday, Sept. 23 at 6 p.m. CT against Butler (7-1-0) in the BIG EAST lidlifter for both programs.
The Golden Eagles are 3-0 on the current homestand and haven't allowed a goal in any of the three outings. The most recent decision was a 1-0 double-overtime win against North Dakota State on Sept. 17.
"We are excited by the opportunity to start BIG EAST play at Valley Fields," head coach Frank Pelaez said. " Butler, which claimed the division title and advanced to the conference tournament championship match last season, provides a tremendous challenge for our team and I am looking forward to seeing how we respond."
GIBSON EARNS BIG EAST HONOR
Marquette University women's soccer player Kate Gibson has been named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Monday morning. Gibson scored the 106th minute golden goal for Marquette on Friday, giving the Golden Eagles a 1-0 win over North Dakota State to close out non-conference play. It marked Gibson's first collegiate goal. She also posted a career-best six shots.
EASTER SETTLING IN
In 2021, netminder Mikki Easter shared time with classmate Lauren Schill in net. This season, Easter has become the primary option for head coach Frank Pelaez and owns a 4-2-0 record in six appearances. She is in possession of a 0.51 goals-against-average (3rd in BIG EAST) and tops the roster with 20 saves.
SERIES VS. BUTLER
Marquette is 3-7-1 all-time against the Bulldogs in a series that dates back to 1995. The two programs tied in the initial meeting and then didn't meet again until Butler joined the BIG EAST Conference in 2013-14. BU has claimed each of the last five meetings, including a 1-0 double-overtime decision on March 28, 2021 in the Valley Fields dome.
UP NEXT
Marquette will travel to Villanova on Sunday, Sept. 26 to continue league play at 12 p.m. CT.
