Golden Eagles pick up first win of BIG EAST Conference play
VILLANOVA, Pa. — The Marquette women's soccer team picked up its first win of BIG EAST Conference play on Sunday afternoon with a 3-1 road victory over Villanova.
The Golden Eagles (5-4, 1-1 BIG EAST) were the aggressors in the first half, controlling the pace right from the start of the match. After three early shots from MU, the Wildcats (6-4, 0-2 BIG EAST) got on the board first on a deflected ball which resulted in an own goal in the 20th minute. The lead didn't last for long, however, as Marquette responded just 74 second later with a goal of their own. Striker Kyle Sprecher found Elsi Twombly on a crossing ball, which the redshirt freshman headed into the goal to even the score at 1-1 in the 22nd minute.
In the 31st minute, Rachel Johnson put the Golden Eagles ahead with her third goal of the season. A throw in from near the corner was deflected several times before meeting the redshirt junior's right foot just outside the 18-yard box and finding the back of the net to make it a 2-1 MU lead. Marquette's first half scoring was done, however. Three minutes later, forward Maggie Starker got in on the scoring action, as the true freshman took advantage of a botched Villanova pass to net the third goal of her career in the 34th minute.
MU hit locker room at halftime with a 13 shots, including five on goal, while holding the Wildcats to just five shots.
Despite a scoreless second half, the Golden Eagles remained aggressive through the final 45 minutes. MU finished the game out-shooting Villanova 18-9, including eight shots on goal for Marquette. Redshirt freshmen goalkeepers Mikki Easter and Lauren Schill split time in the net, each playing one half and combining for five saves in the contest.
UP NEXT: Marquette will remain on the road as it travels to Omaha, Nebraska, to take on Creighton (6-3-2, 0-1-1 BIG EAST) on Thursday, Sept. 30, at 7 p.m. (CST) at Morrison Stadium. The match will be streamed live on FloFC.
