
Volleyball completes sweep of Ohio

MU advances to 5-0 to start 2021 season; plays Illinois State tomorrow

NORMAL, Illinois -- No. 25 Marquette picked up a 3-0 sweep (25-19, 25-18, 25-15) of the Ohio Bobcats on Saturday, notching win number two of the Red & White Invitational at Redbird Arena.Â
The Golden Eagles used a well-balanced attack to power themselves to a fifth-straight victory, with six players notching more than four kills on the afternoon.
"Carsen Murray and Ellie Koontz stepped it up offensively today for us," Marquette head coach Ryan Theis said. "Our passers, Carly Skrabak, Katie Schoessow and Hope Werch, had a lot of good first touches to help get the offense going."
Marquette hit a combined .303 in the match while holding Ohio to a hitting percentage of just .065. MU totaled six aces and nine blocks on the day while committing just 12 attack errors.
Middle blocker Savannah Rennie put up nine kills and six blocks to lead the Golden Eagles (5-0), while Ellie Koontz added eight kills. Carsen Murray contributed seven kills of her own, with Taylor Wolf totaling seven kills and 15 assists.
Graduate student Hope Werch contributed four kills and is now just seven away from being the 13th player in program history to reach 1,000 in their career.
For the Ohio Bobcats (0-4), Caroline Clippard led the way with nine kills. Tria McLean contributed 23 assists while Sam Steele added 13 digs.
This was the lone meeting between the two programs since 1996, and this Marquette win tied up the all-time series 1-1.
The match had special significance for coaches Ryan Theis, Meghan Keck and Peter Netisingha, who all coached at Ohio prior to their time at MU.
Next up for the Golden Eagles is a matchup against Illinois State on Sunday at 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
After the matchup against the Redbirds, MU will return home for a weekend featuring the No. 2 Wisconsin Badgers and the reigning national champion Kentucky Wildcats.Â
