NORMAL, Illinois - Outside hitter Hope Werch reached 1,000 career kills and the No. 25 Marquette Golden Eagles completed a clean sweep (25-22, 25-20, 25-22) of the Illinois State Redbirds on Sunday to cap off the Red & White Invitational.Â
Marquette (6-0) went undefeated on the weekend, winning a five-set marathon over UIC on Friday before sweeping two contests against Ohio and Illinois State to remain unbeaten on the year.
Werch led MU with 10 kills and five service aces, while Savannah Rennie totaled seven kills and six blocks. MU hit a combined .267 in the match while totaling eight blocks against the Redbird attack.Â
Rennie was named most valuable player of the event, while Carsen Murray and Taylor Wolf joined her on the all-tournament team.
Werch reached 1,000 career kills on her seventh kill to make her the 13th player in program history to reach the mark. The Neenah, Wisconsin native is the only player in Marquette history to amass 1,000 kills, 1,000 digs and 150 service aces. She's just the second player in MU history with 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs, joining Jamie Mueller (2003-06).
Taylor Wolf added a double-double with 12 assists and 11 digs, and setter Claire Mosher led with 16 helpers.
Tamara Otene spearheaded the attack of Illinois State (2-3) with 10 kills, while Nicole Lund added eight kills and .400 hitting. Setter Katelyn Lefler contributed 28 assists, plus Kaity Weimerskirch put up 10 digs.
The MU win gives the Golden Eagles a 3-2 edge in the all-time series against ISU.
Up next for the Golden Eagles is a two-game homestand next weekend against reigning national champion and No. 3 Kentucky on Saturday night before a Sunday afternoon matchup against No. 2 Wisconsin.Â
