1/6/2022 12:04:00 PM | Men's Basketball
FS2 features 5:30 p.m. CT national television broadcast
The Marquette University men's basketball team (9-6, 1-3 BIG EAST) hits the road for the first time in 2022 when the squad travels to Georgetown (6-5, 0-0 BIG EAST) for a 5:30 p.m. CT BIG EAST Conference matchup in Capital One Arena. FS1 will feature the national television broadcast, with Eric Collins (play-by-play) and Dickey Simpkins (analyst) calling the action. The Golden Eagles will return home to host DePaul on Jan. 11 in FS1's annual "all-access" broadcast, which provides viewers exclusive content on both teams.
Marquette Owns Narrow Edge In Series
Marquette owns a slim 17-14 advantage in the all-time series, with the Golden Eagles claiming wins in seven of the last 10 outings.
All but two of the series matchups have come since Marquette joined the BIG EAST in 2005-06.
The programs first met during the 1941-42 campaign and the Hoyas were able to claim a 35-34 victory. The next meeting didn't come until the 1971-72 season and Marquette posted a winning 88-44 decision.
The teams split a pair of matchups in 2020-21, with Marquette rallying for a 64-60 win on the road on Jan. 2 and the Hoyas ending MU's season with a 68-49 win in the BIG EAST tournament en route to the title.
Golden Eagles Claim Historic Ranked Win
Marquette picked up its first BIG EAST win of the season and did it in historic fashion, defeating No. 16/17 Providence 88-56 Tuesday night at Fiserv Forum.
The 32-point decision marked the largest winning margin in program history against a top-25 program (339 outings), surpassing the previous mark of 29 points. In 1971, Marquette downed No. 9 Michigan 81-52 and matched that effort in 1995 with a 78-49 win over No. 22 Steve Nash and Santa Clara. The game against the Broncos was played at Milwaukee Arena, which was home to the program when the team won the national title in 1977.
The Golden Eagles have already played six games against top-25 teams in 2021-22 and beginning Jan. 15 could begin a stretch of six-consecutive matchups if Seton Hall, Villanova, Xavier and Providence all remain in the national polls.
The 32-point victory marked MU's biggest win over a BIG EAST opponent since 2019, when the Golden Eagles defeated St. John's by the same margin (86-54 in BIG EAST tourney). Marquette's largest-ever victory over a BIG EAST team came in the 2008-09 season, a 34-point win over Cincinnati.
Highlight Dunk Sparks Career Night For Lewis
One game after struggling with his shooting from the field in a double-overtime loss to Creighton, forward Justin Lewis responded with one of his best games as a Golden Eagle.
Sparked by a highlight-reel dunk for his first basket of the game, the Baltimore native finished the night with a career-high 23 points and also grabbed 11 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the campaign. In 29 minutes of action, he knocked down each of his seven free throw opportunities and was 2-of-4 from long distance. Lewis also found time to chip in two assists and a steal in the victory.
Lewis' double-double was his first since finishing with 17 points and 11 boards against St. Bonaventure on Nov. 21. He has now scored 20-or-more points on three occasions and has finished with double figures in 13-of-15 outings.
Jones Provides Instant Offense In Return
Freshman Kam Jones missed the Creighton game while in health and safety protocols, but wasted no time in making his presence felt in his return against Providence Tuesday night.
The Memphis native finished with 14 points in just 20 minutes off the bench, shooting 5-of-7 from the floor overall and 4-of-5 from long distance. He also added two rebounds and a steal in the 32-point victory.
Jones has now reached double figures in scoring on four occasions in 2021-22.
