Golden Eagles outshoot Pirates 19-8 but fall short Wednesday night
MILWAUKEE — The Marquette men's soccer team (4-7-2, 0-3-2 BIG EAST) suffered a 3-2 loss to Seton Hall Wednesday evening at Valley Fields in Milwaukee. Â
"We're unbelievably upset by the result tonight," said Marquette head coach Louis Bennett. "We couldn't overcome their defending, and the game got out of control. We couldn't connect and we didn't have the poise to get the job done. We keep creating shots but we're not hitting the target."
Despite controlling the pace for the majority of the contest and out-shooting the Pirates 19-8 on the match, the Golden Eagles were unable to take advantage as Seton Hall made the most of its opportunities.Â
Marquette got off to a strong start to the match, using an Edrey Caceres goal in the eighth minute to hop out to an early advantage, but SHU answered to even things in the 28th minute, taking a 1-1 score into the half.Â
In the 55th minute, the Pirates scored again to take the lead, but junior attacker Beto Soto took advantage of a deflection after a shot by Lukas Sunesson was blocked by the keeper and fell at his feet. The 2-2 score held until the 74th minute when a Seton Hall midfielder caught goalie Ludvig Målberg out of position to score from a shot taken well beyond midfield.Â
Marquette's 19 total shots included nine on goal, while the Pirates finished with eight total shots, five on goal. Seton Hall finished the game with 23 fouls to seven for MU.Â
UP NEXT: The Golden Eagles will remain at home this weekend to face UConnl at Valley Fields on Saturday, Oct. 15, at 7 p.m. (CT).
