Mitrovic scores in 51st minute in 1-1 draw against Huskies
MILWAUKEE — The Marquette men's soccer team (4-7-3, 0-3-3 BIG EAST) picked up a point on Saturday night at Valley Fields, posting a 1-1 draw against UConn.
"Our goal was to get three points tonight," said Marquette head coach Louis Bennett. "After going up, we showed a little bit of immaturity and had a small crack, and UConn was able to score a goal from it. We're not an easy team to play against, but sometimes we're an easy team to beat. We did get a point though."
After a very even first half of action, the Golden Eagles came out of the gates strong following the halftime break. In the 51st minute, Marquette used a strong counter to get on the board first as freshman midfielder Mitar Mitrovic beat the goalie with assists from Lukas Sunesson and Beto Soto. This was the second goal of Mitrovic's career.Â
That lead held for a while, but in the 68th minute the Huskies evened things up after a shot was saved by senior goalkeeper Chandler Hallwood, but deflected to another UConn player who put it in the net.Â
On the match, the Huskies out-shot MU 14-9, though Marquette had five shots on goal to UConn's four. Hallwood spent all 90 minutes in net for the Golden Eagles, facing 14 shots and making three saves in the match.Â
UP NEXT: The Golden Eagles will head back out on the road to Chicago next week to face DePaul on Wednesday, Oct. 19 at 2 p.m. (CT).Â
