Twombly's Header Gives WSOC 1-0 Win Over Villanova

Marquette travels to Georgetown Thursday afternoon
The Marquette University women's soccer team (7-6-2, 3-3-1 BIG EAST) concluded its two-match homestand with a 1-0 win against Villanova (3-8-2, 2-5-0 BIG EAST) Sunday afternoon at Valley Fields.

The Golden Eagles are now sixth in the BIG EAST through Sunday's matches and have three outings remaining on the regular-season schedule. The top-six programs quality for the league tournament.

MU's offensive attack dominated throughout the afternoon, finishing with a 19-5 advantage on shots, including a 9-1 edge in attempts on goal. Sophomore Elsi Twombly, who accounted for five of the shots, provided the game winner at the 14:09 mark. Twombly headed in a Mia Haertle corner kick, finding space all alone at the back post.

Other quality opportunities included a Hailey Block header that hit the post and several breakaway chances saved by Villanova netminder Megan McClay.

Marquette returns to action on Thursday, Oct. 20 at 12 p.m. CT when the team travels to Georgetown.
