Koker nets first goal of the campaign
The Marquette University women's soccer team (6-5-1, 2-2-0 BIG EAST) concluded a two-match homestand Sunday afternoon at Valley Fields with a 2-1 loss against UConn (6-4-1, 2-2-0 BIG EAST) in BIG EAST Conference action.
Marquette fell behind 1-0 for the fourth-straight outing, with UConn heading home its first shot in the fifth minute. MU's offensive attack started to gain momentum as the half progressed and the team was finally rewarded in the 30th minute.
Defender Katie Koker netted her first of the season, beating the UConn netminder inside the far post from 12 yards out after some nifty combo passing from Julia O'Neill and Elizabeth Bueckers.
Koker's goal was her first at Marquette since the season finale in 2018 against Seton Hall. She is the 12th Marquette player to score in 2022.
Marquette fell behind 2-1 in the opening moments of the second half after a miscue near the top of the box allowed UConn's Jada Konte a wide-open goal and she touched it in from 10 yards out.
The Golden Eagles had multiple quality chances to net the equalizer in the second half, but were unable to beat the Huskies' Kaitlyn Mahoney.
MU lost four players to injury during the match, including Koker and goalie Mikki Easter late in the second half as the result of a collision during a UConn cross.
Marquette returns to action on Thursday, Oct. 5 at 5 p.m. CT when the team travels to Seton Hall.
