Golden Eagles record 25 shots but fall short to Wildcats
MILWAUKEE — The Marquette men's soccer team (4-5-1, 0-1-1 BIG EAST) fell to Villanova Wednesday afternoon at Higgins Soccer Complex, dropping a 1-0 match.
"Obviously we're extremely disappointed to lose a match where we took 25 shots," said Marquette head coach Louis Bennett. "I thought we battled and we played really, really well, but in and around the box we just couldn't put the ball into the net then we made a huge error on a corner to give them a goal. I'm really proud of the effort and the way that we battled, it was just our finishing that cost us."
Marquette got out to a strong start, registering the first five shots of the contest and out-shooting Villanova 13-6 through the first 45 minutes. Despite largely controlling the pace early on, MU found itself in a scoreless stalemate at the break.Â
Midway through the second half, the match saw its first and only scoring action as the Wildcats were able to curve a corner kick directly into the net in the 60th minute to gain the advantage on the scoreboard.Â
The lack of scoring production for Marquette wasn't because of a lack of opportunities, as it finished the match with 25 shots including seven on net while limiting the Wildcats to 17 shots.. The 25 shots were the most by a MU team since August 30, 2019. Three Golden Eagles registered five or more shots, led by junior forward Beto Soto's seven, the most by a MU player this season.Â
In net, senior Chandler Hallwood played all 90 minutes, facing 17 shots and recording four saves in the contest.Â
UP NEXT: The Golden Eagles will return to action this weekend as they remain on the east coast to face Providence on Saturday, October 8, at 11 a.m. (CT).Â
