Golden Eagles lose heartbreaker to snap six-game winning streak
VILLANOVA, Pa. — The Marquette women's basketball team (17-6, 10-4 BIG EAST) suffered an overtime heartbreaker Friday night at Finneran Pavilion, falling to Villanova 74-63.
Despite holding the lead for 37:02 of regulation, the Golden Eagles were outscored 14-3 in the overtime period as their six-game winning streak came to an end. Villanova's Maddy Siegrist was fouled with 0.9 seconds remaining in regulation and tied the game up at the free throw line to send it into overtime at 58-58.Â
Villanova (17-6, 11-3 BIG EAST) scored the first points of the overtime period, its first lead since the 7:28 mark of the first quarter. The Wildcats went on to win the overtime period 16-5 to hand MU its first loss since Jan. 16.
Junior guard Jordan King led Marquette's scoring efforts with 14 points, while junior forward Chloe Marotta had a strong all-around performance of 13 points, 13 boards and six assists.
The Wildcats were led by Siegrist, who finished with a game-high 42 points and 13 rebounds.Â

Marotta's double-double was the fifth of her career and third of the season.

Antwainette Walker had her best scoring outing of the season, finishing with 10 points.Â

This was the second double-figure scoring outing of Walker's career.

Marquette finished the game shooting 37.9 percent (25-of-66) from the floor, 30.0 percent (3-of-10) from 3-point range and 71.4 percent (10-of-14) from the charity stripe.Â

This was just Marquette's third time losing a game when leading at half under Coach Duffy (50-3 record).

With the loss, Villanova sweeps the regular season series. Marquette is 18-12 all-time against the Wildcats.
UP NEXT: Marquette returns home to the Al McGuire Center on Sunday, Feb. 13 as it hosts No. 8 UConn. Tip-off is set for 1:30 p.m. (CT) and the game will be broadcast on FOX.
