Golden Eagles outscored 27-11 in second home loss of the season
MILWAUKEE — The Marquette women's basketball team (17-7, 10-5 BIG EAST) fell to No. 8 UConn Sunday afternoon inside of the Al McGuire Center, 72-58.
After four quarters of nearly even basketball, the Golden Eagles entered the fourth quarter with a 47-45 advantage when the league-leading Huskies gained some momentum. Having never led by more than four points through three quarters, Connecticut outscored MU in the fourth quarter 27-11.
"We're extremely disappointed by the way that we played those last five minutes," said Marquette head coach Megan Duffy. "We were tough, our defense was really good, then we just didn't have enough toward the end."
Three different Marquette players scored in double-figures, highlighted by sophomore guard Liza Karlen's 15 point, nine rebound performance. The MU starting unit accounted for 54 of the team's 58 points.
UConn (17-5, 11-1) caught fire to shoot 73.3 percent (11-of-15) in the fourth quarter. The Huskies were led by Azzi Fudd, who finished with a game-high 24 points, 11 of those coming in the fourth.

Liza Karlen and Chloe Marotta each pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.

Jordan King led MU with five assists.

Karissa McLaughlin played all 40 minutes for Marquette.

This was just the second loss for Marquette inside the Al McGuire Center this season. MU is now 12-2 at home this year.

Marquette's starting five scored 54 of the team's 58 points. Its first bench points didn't come until there was under a minute remaining in the contest.

On the game, Marquette shot 46.2 percent (24-of-52) from the floor, 25.0 percent (3-of-12) from 3-point range and 77.8 percent (7-of-9) from the free throw line.

Marquette outrebounded UConn 33-28. It has now won the rebounding battle in 19 of 23 contests this season.

Televised on FOX, this was the first time in program history the team has played a game on network television.

The Golden Eagles are now 0-13 all-time against UConn.
