Golden Eagles beat Bellarmine, 9-8, in Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky – The Marquette University men's lacrosse team won its season opener against Bellarmine, 9-8, on freshman Bobby O'Grady's fourth goal of the game in triple overtime.
Michael Allieri made 12 saves in the cage and O'Grady scored four goals, including the game winner, at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium in Louisville.
O'Grady stacked up four goals, including two in the third period and the sudden-victory winner, to give the Golden Eagles (1-0) the win in their season opener.
Neither team lead by more than two at any point in the game and only one goal was scored in the fourth quarter as Bellarmine scored to tie the game at eight apiece.
Through two overtime periods, both teams had opportunities to win the game with an eventful second overtime. The Golden Eagles had two shots in their final possession but Bellarmine netminder JC Higginbotham was equal to all tests in the overtime period.
Marquette dominated the third and final overtime and O'Grady fired a shot top corner to notch the OT winner.
The Golden Eagles dominated in ground balls, 27, to Bellarmine's 19, and also in shots, 46, to Bellarmine's 28.Â
Bellarmine (0-3) dropped its third game in a row, and will stay at home to face Canisius College next weekend. Marquette is 5-3 all-time against Bellarmine and has now won two in a row in the series. The last match-up with the Knights came in 2021 in which Marquette won, 11-10, in Milwaukee.
NEXT UP:Â Marquette will travel south to Florida next weekend to take on Jacksonville University. That match-up will be on Feb. 19 at 11 a.m. CT as the Golden Eagles look to extend their win streak.
