
Lyons shots 5-under 67 in second round of Puerto Rico Classic

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – Freshman Max Lyons shot a 5-under 67 in Monday's second round of the Puerto Rico Classic at Grand Reserve Country Club and sits in a tie for 16th at 7-under par
Lyons began his day on the par-4 ninth hole and had six birdies on the first 17 holes before ending his round with a bogey on the par-3 eighth. His lone blemish of the morning came after a run of three-straight birdies on holes 5-7.
He sits four strokes in front of redshirt junior Tyler Leach, who posted a round of even-par with three birdies offsetting as many bogeys. Leach is tied for 42nd at 3-under.
Graduate student Hunter Eichhorn, who was MU's leader after a first round 68, shot a 2-over 74 on Monday and closed his round with bogeys on three of the final six holes. He did end his round with a birdie on the par-4 seventh.Â
The Golden Eagles entered the day seventh as a team with a 11-under 277, but dropped four spots on the leaderboard with a combined round of 1-under 287. They are tied with the University of Iowa in 11th place at 12-under for the tournament.
The third and final round is set to begin at 5:30 a.m. Central time on Tuesday with a shotgun start. MU's lineup will go off holes 11-14 with East Tennessee State and Iowa, while Sima-Aree begins his round on the 17th hole with Maryland's Chris Tanabe and Oklahoma's Jaxon Dowell.
Eichhorn owns a best finish of 17th in the event (+3, 216) in 2018 with a 54-hole low score in 2019 of a 1-under 215 (T21). He has recorded individual rounds of 2-under par in each of the three Puerto Rico Classics in which he has participated.
The par-72 course plays at 7,506 yards and the individual medalist of the event will receive an invitation to the PGA Tour's Puerto Rico Open from March 3-6.
Marquette tied with Iowa for 10th place at 2-over par in its most recent appearance in the Puerto Rico Classic in 2020, the last event the Golden Eagles competed in before COVID shut down the rest of the season. Last year's event was canceled due to the on-going pandemic.
