Women take first, men second at Warhawk Invite
WHITEWATER, WISCONSIN – Saturday afternoon the Marquette men's and women's track and field teams concluded the Warhawk Invitational & Mutli. The women finished first out of six with 220 points, and the men second with 93.5 points.
"It was really nice out, but also very windy which affected some of the sprint times positively and slowed down some of the distance races having them run into the wind half the time," head coach Bert Rogers said. "The team put together a good effort with some good performances and we are coming away from this meet feeling pretty solid with where we are at."
Junior Simon Werven took first in the Decathlon scoring 6235 points. Werven recorded personal bests in the decathlon 110-meter hurdles and javelin throw. He ran a 15.37 in the hurdles and threw 39.31 meters in the javelin.
For the multi-women, Mila Puseljic won the heptathlon with a score of 3810. Puseljic finished in the top two in five of the seven events, taking first in the long jump and 800 meters.
It was a sweep for the Golden Eagles in the women's long jump claiming the top-three spots. Lindsey Mirkes took the gold clearing a height of 1.68 meters/5 feet, 6 inches. Annika Bynum and Katie Dingle took the next two spots both clearing a height of 1.58 meters/5 feet, 2.25 inches.
It was a good day for the throwers from Marquette on both the men's and women's sides. Vinnie Voudrie took first in the men's discuss with a mark of 43.83 meters/143 feet, 9 inches. He also received runner-up honors in the hammer throw with a distance of 53.53 meters/175 feet, 7 inches. Senior Allie Flando took first in the hammer throw with a mark of 51.23 meters/168 feet, 1 inch. She would also take the silver in the shot put with a mark of 13.35 meters/43 feet, 9.75 inches.
Freshman Kaylee Hopp recorded a personal best in the triple jump with a mark of 11.30 meters/37 feet, 1-inch en route to earning the silver medal.
Carley Hintz won the 200-meters with a PR of 25.75. Hintz also earned runner-up honors in the 100-meters with a personal best time of 12.34.
In the 400-meter hurdles, Mitchell Van Vooren took first recording a personal best and the No. 7 time in program history. Freshman Caden George finished second and ran a PR of 58.48.
"I was pretty pleased with the performances today. It was another step forward as we look to improve each meet as we head towards BIG EAST."

Next weekend, April 28-30, the Golden Eagles will travel to Des Moines, Iowa for the Drake Relays. Members of the team will also be competing at UW-Whitewater on Friday, April 29.
